The International School Rheintal serves the educational needs of the international community in the Liechtenstein, St. Gallen and Vorarlberg region. ISR opened in 2002 with 19 students in classes from Grade 1 to Grade 7. In each successive year one grade level was added, now the school goes to Grade 12. Kindergarten was added in the second year and is offered for 3 to 6 year olds.
ISR offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme from Kindergarten to Grade 6, the IB Middle Years Programme for Grades 7 to 10 and the IB Diploma Programme for Grades 11 and 12.
The IB programmes promote the education of the whole person, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social development.
ISR is defined through its guiding statements, including the Vision and Mission Statements and Philosophy. These were all developed through contributions from the teachers, management, students, parents and the Board and guide us when we make the decisions in our school, thus influencing the education of the students.
The language of instruction is English. Extra support in English is given if required. The German language is taught throughout the school as a first language for native and advanced speakers of German, and as a foreign language.
The school provides specialist teachers for children with special education needs. If a child needs additional support beyond what the school can offer, the school will work with the parents to find appropriate professionals or support.
Many co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are offered to enhance the programme. In addition to the basic academic programme, students will participate in both local and extended field trips. Such field trips are used for educational, recreational and social development. All students are expected to participate in school field trips.
Students will have opportunities to perform music and drama and to display their individual work in the school.
After school activities are offered during the year. Sessions run for approximately 8 weeks and the activities vary throughout the year – depending on student interest and availability of instructors. Examples of activities which have been offered are cooking, band, gardening, computer activities, chess, arts, Model United Nations, International Award, dance and photography.
International-mindedness is at the core of ISR. Our over 150 students are from all over the world and hold passports from 30 different countries.

ISR also welcomes parental involvement in the school and feels it is important that parents take an active interest in the schooling of their children. Information evenings, parent-teacher conferences and curriculum workshops are some of the opportunities where parents can get to know the school better. A number of social events where families are invited are also organized throughout the year.
The school year is comprised of 175 teaching days and extends from the end of August to the end of June, with holidays in October, December/January, February and Spring. The school observes Swiss national and cantonal holidays. Instruction for Kindergarten starts at 9:00am and ends at 3:30pm. Half days ending at 12:30pm are possible in Kindergarten 1 and 2. Instruction for Grades 1 to 12 starts at 9:10am and ends at 3:40pm. Hot lunches are available for the students – these are paid for separately by the parents.
ISR belongs to a number of professional associations, which also contribute to defining what we are as a school. ISR is a member of the International Baccalaureate (IB), the Council of International Schools (CIS), the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and the Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS).
In June 2016 the school was accredited by the Council of International Schools.
Parents are expected to maintain health, accident and liability insurance for their children. The school’s insurance does not provide coverage for students.
