As International School Rheintal (ISR) enters its 25th anniversary year, the school is marking an important moment of transition, celebrating the people and vision that have shaped ISR over the past quarter of a century while looking ahead to its next chapter under new leadership.
Heiner Graf, one of the founders of ISR and Chair of the ISR Board until his retirement in July 2026, has played an instrumental role in the school’s development from its beginnings. His vision, dedication and long standing commitment over 24 years have contributed significantly to shaping ISR into the school community it is today.
Over the past 25 years, ISR has become an integral part of the region’s educational landscape and is the only International Baccalaureate (IB) school in the region. Originally established to provide international education for families relocating to the Rhine Valley, ISR has evolved to serve a diverse community of both international and local families seeking a globally recognised IB education for their children. The school has also established itself as an indispensable asset for the region’s economic strength.
A major milestone in this development was the move to ISR’s new purpose-built campus in Buchs in 2023, providing the school with modern facilities and a home designed to support its continued growth and development.
With students representing around 50 different nationalities, ISR offers a diverse and international learning environment that prepares young people to become globally minded and responsible citizens. In doing so, ISR also contributes to the attractiveness of the region as a place to live, work and raise a family.
Till Hornung, Vice Chair of the ISR Board highlighted: “Heiner’s vision, dedication and leadership as Chair of the Board have been instrumental in shaping ISR into the school it is today. We are deeply grateful for his many years of commitment and the lasting contribution he has made to our school and community.”
A new leadership chapter
The anniversary coincides with an important step in ISR’s organisational development. The school has transitioned into a foundation and, since 1 August 2026, Dominique Hasler has served as Chair of the Board, with Owen Murphy taking on the role of Director at ISR.
As Director, Owen Murphy leads ISR at the operational level, while collaborating with Hasler and the Board to ensure strong governance and strategic oversight.

25 years and the next chapter
The anniversary will be celebrated throughout the school year, providing opportunities for the ISR community and the wider region to connect with the school and learn more about international education in the Rhine Valley.
A highlight of the anniversary year will be a special 25th Anniversary Open House, planned around ISR’s Founders Day in March. The event will invite families, alumni, partners, neighbours and anyone interested in getting to know ISR to visit the campus, meet members of the school community and experience ISR’s international learning environment first hand.
